Round 12 Challenge Season plus Frank Vaughan and Efren Reyes Feature

Frank Vaughan

Our feature Pin-up this week is Frank Vaughan. Frank has been playing in the Bangkok Pool Community Teams for many years. This year he chanced his arm with the Bangkok Heat team competing in the Asia Pool Challenge in Jakarta, And he starred.

Originally from Kansas City Missouri, as a kid, Frank told us he wanted to be a CIA agent. But he was shy to talk about being twice the winner of the Kansas City Junior Chess Champion. He says that was a long time ago.

Frank is no newcomer to the international scene with 13 years in business in Shanghai and representing Shanghai in the APC in 2017. Now retired in Thailand he is living his dream with his wife Khan.

Round 11 Challenge Season Update

Next week Nov 28 will see Wassana and Mitch hosting their 18th Traditional Thanksgiving Party at Moonshine.

I don't want to miss saying " When they were 17 it as a "VERY GOOD YEAR" because of we all like that song, the event and Moonshine family equally so.

No-one misses this wonderful once a year event where it is impossible not to enjoy the fun of over-eating, and coming together.

(Yes this link is Frank Sinatra)

Results for the week

Catchups

This week we had one more deferred match. Make sure they are played by round 17.  We really don't want teams being disqualified from winning a trophy because they have no played all their matches.

Deferring does disrupt so to avoid that teams are expected to call for help if they need help.

All teams have the same issue so we all try to help each other. That's a given. If you have exhausted all attempts and still have to defer, please give the others effected a heads up.

Preparing for a match and arranging food and keeping track of 40 teams each week is not trivial. So please show respect your opponents, the hosting venues and the league if you are stuck. The rules are clear but enforcing them is not the goal.

Here are all the deferred matches  - with played and arranged dates marked

Round 10 Challenge Season Update

If a 2 year old can do it it can't be that hard as long as someone shows him where to look. Do you know where we keep Bangkok Pool Community information and how you can get access?

Traditionally our website was built for a desktop with tabs across by subject. Blogger for our site frankly is a bit limited and yes Wordpress etc. might be better.

But what we have is completely free and easy to use technically, so it works for us. Google docs is also free and we use that to store information on a free google drive

All that means we have easy fit to native links to our all web pages.

The best part is all that requires generic skill that most people have who use excel and word.

Here is how it all hangs together:

It is all ever so easy to collaborate with as all the documents can be shared and update live with any of the teams and across google products. eg. captains can update scores and byes and defer matches. They can also change their contact information without any one else having to get out of bed.

The desktop is still the best way to see things but who carries a laptop around any more. Blogger they way we use it does not allow extended page phone format. So we created one ourselves.

On your Phone if you go to www.Bangkokpoolcommunity.com, the first screen you see is a smartphone formatted version of our News page. Then go find the Phone Menu page and save that as a tile on your start page.
From then on you have relevant resources in one friendly list. http://www.bangkokpoolcommunity.com/p/small-menu.html?hl=en

Here is a copy of that together with a short explanation of what each item contains.

Phone Menu
  1. News Updates Weblog with News Events and Ladder standings for the week
  2. Facebook Page News Updates and Social Event and Sponsor Information
  3. Fixtures Wall size layout of whole season fixture
  4. Team Contacts Team Captains contact information - includes form to update
  5. Ladder Live Link to current Ladder with link to team Scores / Fixture
  6. Next Match   Fixture Extract showing the next round matches only
  7. CERROS Scorers system - Host captains post Results BYE & deferred
  8. Rules Overview and comprehensive rules of play and etiquettes
  9. Score Sheets Blank score sheets to be printed and used for matches
  10. Results by Round Round results for each team
  11. Results by Team Team results for each round
  12. Raw Scores Scores as posted (live via cerros)
  13. Rules Quiz A fun way to check yourself on the rules in 3 minutes
  14. Financial Status Checklist to see if your teams has paid the season subs
One annoying thing for some who don't read Thai is the Thai language on some Google forms? We have no control over that being as it is controlled by the local country default or your personal phone settings. To fix it check your google account settings and change to your desired language.

We never build Forms in any other than English language. Some of the Form buttons and Form prompts we don't create can be generated in Thai. They are native prompts being mostly advisory  so no big deal, e.g Choose, Next, Enter, etc but it is annoying if it not native for you.

We try to include ?hl=En at the end of the URL but that does not always work. Google may override it based on your gmail, chrome or iphone account settings.

Challenge Season 2019 Mid Season Update

Decked out in Yellow Chinese syle uniforms here are some regular Bangkok Pool Community supporters out enjoying themselves.

While we have all been having fun playing pool, the time has been flying with half the season now played.

Unusually the Round 9 results see midseason definite leaders not clear with an anybody's guess on who will emerge with all the comps all close.

This week has also been eventful with the Joy Chinese 8 Ball tournament now underway at Show DC. The pictures show no shortage of familiar talent for this to be another huge success.

The nuances of Joy Chinese 8 Ball rules has tested some of the leagues regular 8 ball players who have to learn new rules. Surprisingly as our Bangkok Community Rules are well understood by most players, so they are able to quickly adapt.

For those interested we dusted off our rules quiz , added some wrinkles to test people and now republish it for everyone to have a go.

For the record here are this week results & next matches.

Update on Challenge Season Round 3 and More.

To kick off the season there has been a lot going on. We have been enjoying Pizza Mania's yummy pizzas and Cue Sport Thailand feedback is they are selling Rhino X like hotcakes. As our outside sponsors.they have given us a big thumbs up for supporting them.

Having them and others on board is clearly making a big difference to them and our respective ambitions

iFree Group who made the Bangkok Heat team communication so easy and Bangkok Life Partners are also now front and centre supporting us.

Check out IFreeGroup.com. Using iFree as a team we had a great new way to stay connected to the world of travel and mobile communications in Jakarta.

Please also make welcome any Bangkok Life Partners clients visiting from other countries to explore new partner introductions.

In fact, for all of our new and longtime stalwarts who support us, we are proud to have their logo's on our new banner.

That includes Fair Play Apparel, Riverfall Wines, Taom Cue Chalk Thailand Pool Tables & Shernox some of who are also benefactors for Bangkok Heat. All the rest on the banner you know and support as family, our venue sponsors.

Yes, our web site name, our logo, our banners and our domain name, are all now changed to reflect our new identity as Bangkok Pool Community.

The coming of age decision by the committee and captains who attended a special committee meeting agreed that our mission is much more than just being social. Now also highly community-oriented, we all know that will always be work in progress.

On the international scene, Bangkok success in Jakarta at the Asia Pool Challenge was the injection we needed to bring the pool capital of Asia, home to Bangkok.

Coming in equal second by just 1 game told us all the countries have great teams and like us want to participate to enjoy playing. We also know we got much more out of it by including our whole community and recognising all the contributions at all levels.

For those who missed it, you can watch the Jakarta APC event on the APC site. we have also assembled the videos on our new streaming site library http://www.cuesportslive.asia/

That boosted to general enthusiasm also gives us the confidence to host 2 major events in Bangkok next year.

The first in April is a two-tier Sponsored International 10 Ball and 8 Ball series with up to 10 countries being invited to participate in. More on that soon

The 2nd is the 10th Anniversary of the Asia Pool Challenge in September,

The APC, as we refer to it, was co-founded by Bangkok and Jakarta by Mark Dulgov and Brian Piggot. Albeit they are icons they are regular guys who many of us regard as long-time friends.

Brian leads and is very active as the overall APC organiser. He is based in Jakarta and vital to the international level. Mark retired from the APC committee last year.

As the founder of the Bangkok Pool League, which was 2nd in size to New York as the largest in the world, the experience from Mark that we have drawn on has been immeasurable, as has his ongoing support that has made our transitioning Bangkok Pool Community possible.

This week our Challenge season teams saw Round 3 matches completed. That involved 38 teams competing in 4 separate round-robin competitions where collectively they have played 1191 games.

The Premier League with 6 top tier teams, this season so far have played 600 games.

For the extended International level now in the works, Bangkok Heat Qualifying series will start around February and will also be expanded to allow more players to qualify for the international events. The BHQ committee will decide that.

The organising committees of each are represented by common members for all levels so synergies are coordinated and common ambitions naturally addressed in scale and balance with BPC overarching peak perspectives.

Here is the update on the ladder to round 3 community and premier league competitions.
